I do clean them...

I use a new bag of beans and soak them overnight. I then rinse the water and follow the instructions on the package. I sometimes add bacon or garlic at the start, but the fish flavor is there with or without the extras.

I've never cooked fish in that pot. I'm pretty sure that I've only used it for pot roast.

1] are you using dried or canned beans? If canned, what is packed in the can with them?
2] have you tried different brands?
3] if dried, after you soak them, do you change the water to cook them?
4] what are you mixing them with when you cook?
5] have you tried different oils/fats when you prepare them?
6] what else do you cook in that pan/pot?

It could be the pot you're using to cook them in....especially if it's an iron pot used previously for deep frying fish. ?? Just a wild guess.
