From past experience with this little guys, it would be best if you bought them the day you intend to cook them.

If you need to buy then the day before try putting them into a large container with fresh, dechlorinated water, but make sure they can't get out and have enough room so they're not on top of one another. (bathtub, kiddy pool) They are also little escape artists so watch out for that.

bon apetite!

When buying any fish spell FISH

buy it Fresh
keep it on Ice
buy from a Sanitary shop
eat it in a Hurry

If your mudbugs are live, you can store them like lobsters - in a large paper bag poked full of holes - in the coldest part of your refrigerator (not the freezer) for one night. The cold will make them go into stasis which may or may not be more humane when getting ready to cook them.

You can also store them in cold water (in a large cooler) in the coldest room of your house for one night.

Discard any that die during that time.

When I fish for mine I keep them in a bathtub half full of water. After a day and a few trips to the lake to keep loading up they are all still alive.
