Valtrex HELPS prevent the spread of herpes, but it doesn't guarantee it . If a person has sex with someone who has genital herpes there is ALWAYS going to be a chance they will contract the virus from them. Nothing is 100% effective in preventing genital herpes or any other STDs.
Of course being on suppress therapy (like Valtrex) helps prevent the spread of the virus. Also, using condoms helps A LOT. I know you and your boyfriend say you don't use condoms, but it really helps preventing the spread of the virus. And, NEVER have sex when you are on an outbreak or think you are getting an outbreak. Genital herpes can be spread when a person is on an outbreak or not, but chances are even greater if they are currently having an outbreak.
I have had genital herpes for 6+ years now. I was with my ex for almost 4 years and he never got the virus, but I was with my current fiance (boyfriend at the time) for only 3 months when he contracted it from me. I hadn't had an outbreak in almost 2 years and he still got it from me!
No matter what kind of precautions a person takes, nothing totally prevents the spread of genital herpes.

Yes, there isn't any. Herpes is caused by a virus. Actually, there is little cure for viruses nowadays. The only thing that you can generally do in the case of a viral infection is strengthen the immune system and hope it fights it off. Not with Herpes, the immune system can't win against it. Thus you only get to treat the symptoms. Once you're infected, it stays with you for life. So don't get infected.
Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.

Genital herpes, commonly known as herpes, is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). This viral infection has no treatment, but with potent antiviral treatment, its symptoms can be lessened and kept under tolerable limits. Valtrex and Famvir are among the 2 most prescribed medicines for the treatment of both male genital herpes and female genital herpes. These 2 drugs can delay the outbreaks of symptoms and can also prevent herpes transmission between sexually active partners. The herpes simplex virus causes genital herpes, cold sores, herpes zoster (shingles) and chicken pox.
Herpes simplex virus
The herpes simplex virus can be spread through any form of person-to-person contact - be it sexual or asexual. But transmission of the virus occurs mostly during sexual contacts. But if a person has an active outbreak of herpes, the infection can be transmitted through mere skin contact with the infected area. The virus usually enters the body through small openings in the skin. The herpes virus cannot stay alive for too long outside the body. But once it's inside your body, it is invincible and cannot be killed or eliminated. This is why Valtrex and Famvir are the most sought after herpes treatments. Let's find out more.

i have herpes and i use valtrex...but i only use it when im on an outbreak to help it go away quicker.
valtrex can help lessen the number of outbreak, help the outbreak pass quicker, and SUPPOSEDLY can help prevent the spread of the disease.
there is NO garuantee what-so-ever...
normally you spread it only when the virus is active or you have an outbreak.
i got herpes from my boyfriend 5 months into the relationship and HES NEVER HAD AN OUTBREAK.
also...
my obgyn doctor suggested i not take valtrex when im not on and outbreak...especially since they have long intervals between them...
i dont know the exact health risks but she said it wouldnt be good for me at all and only prescribes 14 pills a year with no refills until i see her again...
hope that helps a bit =/

Hi there,
In a nutshell, Valtrex can help to reduce symptoms but it does not cure the disease nor does it help to prevent the spread.
Valacyclovir is used to treat cold sores (herpes labialis) and shingles (herpes zoster). It is also used to treat genital herpes in patients with normal immune systems. Valacyclovir can also be used to control genital herpes outbreaks in all patients, including those with HIV. This is also known as suppressive therapy. This medication helps control symptoms, but does not cure the disease.
Valacyclovir belongs to a class of medications known as antivirals. If you are taking valacyclovir for treatment of genital herpes, it is important to follow safe sex practices to lower the chance of giving herpes to your partner, even if there are no symptoms present. Always use a condom made of latex or polyurethane. When you have symptoms or are experiencing an outbreak, do not have sexual contact with your partner.
Cheers.
