I fly Continental on international flights all the time and request the vegan meal. The dinner dish is typically an Indian dish - Rice, veggie, tofu, chickpeas. I like it a lot! They also serve a salad with a lemon dressing and a roll.
For the lunch meal - not so great. A piece of bread with some cucumber, lettuce, and tomato.... also usually a bowl of grapes.

In short, yes you should bring your own food.
Last time I got a meal was when I flew to Hawaii. The vegan meal was something with bulgar and lots of vinegar.
Note, even if you request a vegan meal, there won't be alternatives for the snacks (which are sometimes mini meals themselves.)
Now they only have things for purchase during the flight, and there are almost never any vegan options. You only get a meal if you fly business or first class.
If you visit and scroll down a bit you can see some reviews from 2003 and before for Continental.

"On a couple of domestic connections, I was served an icy cold amy's burrito. Yikes! The first time I ate it as is... The second time I asked if it could be heated up a bit... The attendant did the best she could --she stuck it on top of the coffee machine for a few minutes."

Sometimes it's BAD! And sometimes it's surprisingly good! Some airlines (Northwest, ahem) do stupid things like give vegans instant oatmeal packs with water instead of milk, yet don't bother realizing that the oatmeal pack itself has milk powder...even after hearing a complaint about this at least 3 times over 2 years. Yeah. British Airways has great food, as does Olympic, Egypt Air, and American. Not sure about Continental specifically, but you can check out the site I linked to below. Also, even if you already ordered it, call and confirm again, cause I've been forgotten more than once. And make sure there will be a meal served on the flight, cause sometimes they'll take your preference only for you to find out there is no meal. In any case, if it's a long flight, pack a few snacks to be on the safe side.

I flew United to Germany from the US last year, and ordered the vegan meal. It was good, but the odd thing is that the salad portion was very poor, where the non-vegan meal's salads looked great. There was a non-dairy roll, the salad with a oil/vinegar dressing, a pasta with something I think was eggplant, it was pretty good. The best part was something I had never had before, some sort of grain I guess, served cold. It had no aroma, but it had an incredible lemonny burst of flavor when I put a forkfull in my mouth. The flight attendant couldn't find what it was... the box simply said vegan/vegetarian meal on it. The funny thing is, when I looked on United's website, they listed all kinds of vegetarian meals, broken down into vegan, lacto-ovo, etc. When I called to reserve the lacto-ovo meal (was not vegan at the time), the operator had no idea what I was talking about. She could choose from only one meatless meal, in their system, labeled vegan/vegetarian.

Got some pretty awesome food on JAL, but otherwise it's pretty sucky -- even for non-vegetarians.
