Candida is the genus name of the yeast that is commonly responsible for yeast infections, Candida albicans.
C. albicans lives naturally in the vagina in a delicate balance with bacteria like Lactobacillus. Usually, they flourish happily together and cause no problems.
However problems do arise occasionally. Sometimes the balance gets thrown off. If women take a lot of antibiotics, the Lactobacilli die off, and the yeast (Candida) take over. This is what we call a yeast infection. Other things can throw off the yeast-bacteria balance, like douching, infections, allergies/sensitivities to some materials, or poor hygiene.
Candida also live in places like the throat, under the foreskin (aka jock itch), and any damp, warm crevices of the body (belly buttons etc.). Obese people can get bodily Candida infections in flesh flaps if they don't wash in there enough.
Skin yeast infections can be avoided with good hygiene. Wash and scrub thoroughly with soap and water. Clean under the foreskin and in any flaps. Dry off thoroughly with a clean bath towel. Do not share towels with people, esp. if they have Candida infecitions.
Vaginal yeast infections can be avoided by maintaining good hygiene. Take baths and showers. Don't share towels. Wear clean, dry, breathable cotton underwear. Avoid thongs (yes, these have been linked to increased frequency of yeast infections!). You can eat probiotics like yogurt with active cultures. Don't use massage oils near the genitals.
Oral thrush (Candida infection of the throat) is rare, and only seen in immunocompromised people (AIDS, cancer, etc.) and in babies. If you get oral thrush, see a doctor!
As for my personal experiences with Candida, yeah, been there done that. itched like hell for about three days. Took one Diflucan (fluconazole) tablet and it totally went away.
