You could live on TOTALLY unhealthy foods and still be vegetarian. French fries are vegetarian (unless fried in lard), most baked sweets are vegetarian, a lot of candy is vegetarian, pasta is vegetarian, eggs & dairy are vegetarian (lacto-ovo anyways)... all of these things can pack on pounds if not eaten in moderation. Meat isn't generally what makes meat-eaters fat. FAT makes you fat (as does too many calories, lack of exercise, etc). That CAN be present in any diet. The majority of vegetarians are not fat because they do it at least partly for their health... so they aren't eating all those fatty, overly processed foods.

I'm 13 a little taller then you and 100 lbs. If you think you look fat then you must have gotten the weight wrong. I'm not like super skinny but i'm skinnier then most people i know. I got my percentile and i'm in 75th for height and 50th for weight, which is basically perfect. Btw don't take that as bragging cause i'm not like most girls who are 13 i think i'm fat too, i just want to give you something to compare to. But to answer your question, vegetarians are usually skinny as long as they eat properly. Talk to your doctor and get a bmi (body mass index) that will tell you if you need to lose weight or not.

Just like with any diet what we choose to eat will make us gain or lose weight. The ideal vegetarian diet is made up of various fruits, veggies, grains, nuts, beans, etc. Just beciase someone is vegetarian does not mean that they are automatically aware of what is healthy and what is not.
Eating more than the body burns causes weight gain. If a vegetarian decides to eat nothing but pasta and junk food of course they will be over weight.
I know many healthy vegetarians, and some overweight vegetarians. I also know quiet a few over weight omnivores as well as those who are in shape. It depends what the person is eating. You cannot group an entire set of individuals by the few vegetarians you know.

Some vegetarians are fat because all they eat is carbs. My sister and I are vegetarians and I eat mostly vegetables and other vegetarian foods and dishes =] and I have never been in better shape. My sister on the other hand is fat because she went carb crazy the second she went veggie! she also goes to taco bell and orders everything on the menu with no meat in it!!

My husband is a lacto-ovo vegetarian. In other words, he eats, no animal "meat" or "flesh" (yuck, I know), but, he does eat things like eggs, milk, cheese and other dairy products. He also eats other commercial "meatless" foods available on the market. If you look at the lables on those products, you will see that they are high in carbs. My husband is 6'3" and weighs 265 lbs. At one point, he weighed 300 lbs. So, I guess it really depends on which kind of vegetarian you are as well as what is in the foods you are choosing.

There are PLENTY of fattening meatless foods. Carbs are probably among the worst. Some vegetarians replace the meat they aren't eating with lots of sugar/carbs instead of with healthy veggies.

usually the overweight vegetarians are that way because they eat a ton of junk food, pastries, and sweets. just like people who eat meat and eat junk food and sweets added on with it. there are plenty of thin vegetarians too though. i am one of them, mainly because i don't eat junk food and sweets normally...i eat vegetables, fruits, soy beans, whole wheat, etc. the same goes for thin meat eaters...they eat lean meats and no junk food or sweets. they eat fruits and veggies instead aswell.
so it has nothing do with how a person gets their protein intake...it has everything to do with their diet and lifestyle as a whole.

If you are going to be a vegetarian and get the benefits from it, you need to be aware of what you eat. I think some do it as a religion and don't monitor their protein and fat consumption. Also, maybe they aren't satisfied and are consuming more calories than they need (why are most omnivoirs fat)?

I once saw one of those weight loss competitions on TV "Vegetarians vs. Meat lovers"
Some people replace meat with junk food instead of vegetables and healthier things like you should.
