All they ever seem to serve is tasteless, leathery streaky bacon. Why? What's wrong with a couple of slices of smoked back bacon, cooked slightly crispy yet still soft and flavoursome?

Just curious - I know different cultures have different tastes, but this one I can't explain!

Because being the leading nation of obesity, they think they're cooking the fat out.

They're probably not overcooking it. They're more likely cooking it until it's just right for them. Shouldn't we all enjoy our foods the way we like them... even if someone else doesn't like it the same way?

I prefer my bacon light and crispy.. not soft at all, OR chewy. I don't buy pork bacon anymore, but when I did, I never bought the thick cut because it seemed too chewy to me... and I know how to cook it.

We like it crispy to the point that it crumbles easily. We crumble it on other foods. We call it bacon bits. There are even artificial bacon bits sold in glass jars. yuck
When bacon is soft and less fatty we call it Canadian bacon.

You must be from France and like to chew on soft fat...we Americans like our fat crispy and tasty....so that it is morphed from soft fat to another world of wonder.... If you are getting leathery, streaky(?)bacon...the wrong person is cooking your bacon baby.

Back bacon is not available in the US, that s why. And, yes, you can cook a lot of the fat out of belly bacon. What do you think the grease is that s left in the pan after it s cooked? You can never render it completely unless you burn it to ashes, but you can get a lot of it.

I'm inclined to agree with you, my completely unqualified opinion would be. That the american cuisine are not based on the "Cuisine Nouveau" that are so popular in europe, and hence cook food different. Wich explain other things like chiken fried "whatever", blackend fish etc, etc...

In your world we (USA) overcook our bacon. In our world YOU undercook your bacon. So, I guess it's a horse of a different color depending on where you are :)
