At rest the pulse of an adult (the normal pulse in children may be much higher) varies from 50 to 90 (many sources still quote the much 'older' normal range of 60 to 100) although during sleep it drops into the 40s or even the 30s. All body functions vary during the course of the day responding to a variety of internal and external stimuli. The pulse rate varies in accordance with diurnal circadian variation. If your day / night cycles are 'normal' (for example you get up at 6 AM and go to bed at 10 PM) your pulse peaks at about 11 AM and has a slightly lower peak at about 4 PM. Caffeine, physical activity, emtional stress / excitement, medical illness, elevations in body temperature and a variety of other circumstances elevate pulse above 90. Aerobic activity tends to elevate the pulse to about 85% of (220 minus your age) - assuming that you are in reasonable physical condition.
