I am a Vegan and my friend knows this, but she told me that she has to have meat for her family. Am I being impolite to ask her to go out of her way to make food at dinner time just for me? She has an infant and is 6 months pregnant, and has a husband and a 7 year old.

If I went to someones house and they knew I didn't like or couldn't eat some specific food, and they made it anyway, I just wouldn't eat it. You could pack up some food you can eat, just in case you are still hungry after the meal.
I would think if they are good friends they would include something for you if you are coming to visit them.
You could ask her if you could bring some special dish along and then they could try your kind of cuisine.
I think you would be impolite to ask her to make special food for you only. Couldn't she make some veggie thing for the whole family, they need that kind of food too.

Well was she implying that she expected you to eat meat, that she wouldn't be willing to accommodate you, or was she forewarning you that meat would be present? There's a difference.

It would be impolite for you to expect her to go out of her way to cook anything too involved as it would be just as impolite for her to ignore your lifestyle choice. No ones HAS to have meat, as you know, no more than they have to have soda, sweets, etc. It's a matter of preference.

You should discuss this issue ahead of time, because some people think vegetarian and vegans are the same thing, and that vegetarians will eat chicken for some reason. You should expect to cook for yourself during the visit, or offer to make a vegan dish each night that can be served to the whole family, alongside their porkchops.

Usually, when one is a guest, the host is the one who makes way for a guest.

In touchy situations, I've often just cooked for myself. I try to be as happy and upbeat as I can. And take with me some very VERY easy yet substantial (i.e., filling and nutritious) recipes.

Such as the grilled portobello with garlic aioli dressing from Idiot's Guide to Vegan Living.

IF you make that - be sure you make enough for everyone. It's one of those quick and easy meals that changes the minds of the most die hard meat eaters.

Whole grain buns are the BOMB for this. Even if you don't have time to make the aioli dressing, Garlic/Dill Miso Mayo is an excellent substitute.

yes....impolite.

if she is a friend, she has far more on her plate already than need be (two kids, one on the way and a husband to boot). You should ask if she doesn't mind if YOU make something for yourself in her kitchen, out of the way of her routine, that you would like to share with the rest of her family. Take it as an opportunity to convert some folks and make your tastiest recipes!

Yes, it would be impolite. You will have to buy and prepare your own food. Usually people who eat meat have no clue what to feed a vegetarian.

Yes, under the circumstances it would be impolite. Give the poor woman a break and bring your own.

Even if you weren't asking for a special meal, it's polite to offer to help cook. Cook something small along side, or ask her to make some extra salad or something.

I would offer to cook them wonderful exclusively vegan meals while I was there.

If they were not interested I would stay and eat elsewhere and visit them during times they are not eating.
