Not really.
The vegan food pyramid consists of
legumes/ nuts, grains, fruits and veggies

Grains are super cheap. You have your rice, whole wheat pasta, breads.
Beans are also pretty cheap. A pound of tofu is only around $2.50. If you want fake meats, that can get a bit expensive, but no more than a meat-eater's diet.

Veggies and fruits can be expensive, but buy the ones that are on sale or in season. People should be eating fruits and veggies anyway, so it is not like they are an unusual expense. Also, if you are in a bind, you can buy freshly frozen veggies. You can get a whole lot of spinach for 99 cents.

Also, I have been working on growing my own veggies. If I grow enough, I can freeze them and eat them for longer than just the growing season.

Actually, my grocery bill is much smaller now that I'm a veggie.
Not all veggies buy organic produce. I have a great market in my city that offers a lot of locally-grown fruit and veggies. I would much rather buy that and support my local farmers than buy something organic from half a world away. That's just my personal preference, of course.
But to answer your question, yes, it can be expensive if someone ONLY buys organic things. The products that I purchase (like soy chicken nuggets, rice milk and the like) -as you referred to them, "not made from animals" are really not that much more expensive.
I do think it depends on where you live, though.

Not all vegans eat only organic produce and packaged foods. I personally go to my local farmer's market and the vegetables there are much cheaper than at a regular grocery store. I also make most everything I eat at home including breads, etc, and my grocery bill is now about 25% lower than when I ate meat. You find ways to make cheaper meals. Try "Vegan With A Vengeance" cookbook...there are tons of cheap quick meal ideas in there. Have a nice day.

Organic meat is way more expensive that organic fruit and vegetables. Eating fruit and vegetables and grains is much less expensive than eating meat. I haven't bought meat in about 20 years, but I know that it costs more than vegetables. Buying in season vegetables also reduces the cost because they are more abundant and cheaper. Shopping at farmers markets also reduces the cost.

You don't have to buy all organic products. I find being a vegetarian much cheaper than when I used to buy both meat and veggies.

it can be more expensive, but the money is worth it, knowing that your not contributing to the slaughtering of animals. i will never be able to go back and support the slaughter houses after the videos i've seen.
