I have been trying to go veggie for a while now (on and off anyway) and snow peas are my favorite. This curious Japanese vegetable edamame, is it like my favored peas? I like cooking snow peas stir fried with a little abalone sauce and garlic, can I substitute edamame for snow peas for a different flavor? How do you like your edamame?

They are a type of soy bean. I like them steamed, on salads...I think they would make a good substitute for snow peas.

Edamame Substitute

They do taste similar to pea pods or snow peas.

Edamame is an immature soy bean. It's definitely good in a stir fry, or in a soup.

I'd use a vegetarian oyster sauce (from mushrooms) instead of abalone as the latter is not vegetarian.

Oh, I've always had edamame outside of the pod. You wouldn't eat the edamame pods.

Edamame are green soybeans that are steamed or boiled and lightly salted. You do not eat the pods like you can with sugar snap peas or snow peas. They sure are yummy though!!! And good for you too!

Good luck with the veggie thing, by the way :)

I love edamames. Someone turned me on to them a few months back.

They are similar to snow peas, but you don't eat the pods. Just pop out the beans.

I can only find them frozen where I am. I like to pop them into the micro for about 2 min(in water) to defrost and then sprinkle with sea salt. I eat them as a snack, I was surprised I liked them so much, never in my life did I ever expect to love having beans for a snack.

You can buy frozen shelled edamame which are very easy to incorporate into many recipes. The other night, I made a very good pasta recipe with broccoli, edamame, and walnuts.

Boil pasta according to directions. Put 1tbsp oil into frying pan on medium heat. Add several cloves minced garlic and stir for several seconds. Add 3 cups chopped broccoli and stir for 2 minutes. Add 1/2 cup hot pasta water, and add 1 cup frozen shelled edamame. Cook for 4-5 minutes. Add to cooked pasta. Also add 1 cup chopped walnuts (can be toasted) and some grated Parmesan.

Enjoy!

Edamame shells aren't eaten like snow peas - the beans inside the shell are soy beans.
I like mine just steamed and salted - they are great hot or cold!
In fact, I usually put a bowl of them out at my get-togethers.
Steam them in the shell, and then just suck out the beans!
They are really delicious - one of my weaknesses!

i though this, too. but, edamames have a tough outer shell...so don't try to eat the shell like i did! you pop it and eat the pea inside.
