Creatinine is a chemical waste molecule that is generated from muscle metabolism. Creatinine is produced from creatine, a molecule of major importance for energy production in muscles. Approximately 2% of the body's creatine is converted to creatinine every day. Creatinine is transported through the bloodstream to the kidneys. The kidneys filter out most of the creatinine and dispose of it in the urine.Creatinine, urea and urate all increase as the ability of the kidneys to filter fluid within the body declines. This is irrespective of the cause of reduced efficiency of the kidneys.

Most of my patients have renal failure thus they have high levels of creatinine and urea. Your grandma already has a degree of renal insufficiency because of her age. As we get older our organs especially the kidneys pack up. I hope your grandma is seeing a nephrologist. I can't recommend you any medications because this depends on what your grandmas blood chemistry figures are and that is the doctors job. I can encourage you to limit her fluid intake to 1-1.5 liters a day. Sounds a bit cruel but that is sensible for someone who has renal insufficiency. If she is diabetic or hypertensive, encourage to regularly take her medications. Good blood sugar and blood pressure control can help prevent or all together stop the progress of renal failure. As much as possible she should eat healthy. Try to avoid food that are high in salt, fat and cholesterol. Potassium and phosphate can also be a problem if you have renal failure. As much as possible don't let her eat foods that are rich in potassium and phosphate.
