Up to a point it's the same as holding a bowel movement ( I really need to tell you this? ). If you simply can't hold it any longer, to borrow Mr. Franklin's declaration, Fart Proudly. Now that you add that it's your grandfather you are writing about...not all older people can control their functions very well. He may have a stomach/intestinal problem you aren't aware of. Or he's too old to care anymore. Kind of like children swearing in public, no one says anything to them.

To control farting in public places, establishment of a reasonable fine might be in order, say $150 for a first offense, maybe a little public service time for subsequent offenses. Citizens could be given modest rewards for turning in offenders, say something in the $50 range. Post a few signs, perhaps a public relations campaign with billboards and a few radio public service announcements that public farting was now a criminal offense--it would probably put a stop to the problem.

Sorry, but there may not be a solution. As people age,muscles dissappear and become less functional. The anus is a ring muscle and may have lost some function already. There are tests that may be done (sonogram, muscle testing) and exercises he can do for it.
On top of this, most older folk just dont care anymore. And that may reflect in speech (they just say what they think) or actions, like your granddads!

it really depends on the cause of your farting. if it's lactose intolerance or dyspepsia, then you can really hold your fart by concentrating on it not going out. it's just air. just keep still..but if it's diarrhea induced, you're in trouble because it goes out without warning. It's really hard to keep it in if you're tummy is rumbling.=)
