It depends on the severity of the pain and how much tolerance the patient has built up to the drug. Here are some general dosing guidelines:

Children: 0.5-1 mg/kg/dose every 4-6 hours as needed; maximum: 60 mg/dose

Adults: 30 mg every 4-6 hours as needed; patients with prior opiate exposure may require higher initial doses. Usual range: 15-120 mg every 4-6 hours as needed

The usual dose for codeine is from 30-60 mg as necessary or when you have pain. you can take 30 mg if you don't really need that much. I have patients on codeine 4 times a day but we don't give them 60 mg in one go. I hope you are taking laxatives while on codeine because this can cause constipation. I hope you don't drive while on this drug. It can cause drowsiness.

Yes and the nice side affect, constipation which is more painful, good luck.
