Absolutely. Herpes can affect the whole body.
Cold sores usually affect the mouth area, while genital herpes affect the genital area (which includes the butt and anal area). Herpes sores can also appear other places on the body like the eyes (ocular herpes) and even the fingers, elbows and knees (although this is less common).
Shingles and chickenpox are also a form of herpes (herpes simplex virus 3) and they can affect the entire body with a "rash like" symptom.
If you want to see what herpes looks like on a persons bottom or any where else on the body, just do an image search using a search engine like Yahoo or Google.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?

Yes. You can get herpes simples 1(AKA cold sores) or herpes zoster (shingles) on the buttocks. The virus stores itself laying dormant in the lower spine. When there is a trigger factor that awakens the virus and it becomes active, it will follow certain nerves paths. Simplex 1 is usually on the lips, however, it can follow any other nerve path, in my case it is my inner left thigh. Shingles can appear around the waist, down the buttocks, up to the neck, one side of the face and other places not quite so common.

It is possible to to have outbreaks on the buttocks although this is not the most common place for the virus to manifest itself.
