Some HDL problems are hereditary, do you know what
level your triglycerides are? Higher triglycerides can also
lower your HDL level, also if you are taking any medications
for hypothyroidism.

You can take Niacin but that can cause flushing or try
Nialor, that is a non-prescription medication that does
not cause as much flushing. If you are not familiar with
the term flushing, it is when your face and skin feels warm
you can normally take an aspirin about half an hour before
taking Niacin and it will ease the flushing sensation.

My Cholesterol is 242, Triglycerides 550 and HDL 22
this after taking 3 different prescriptions to lower the
lipids, the down side is they also lower HDL.

Don't worry to much about a 28, doctors like to see it 40 or
above, my doctor would love to see your 28

EDIT: Fish oil works as well if you can stand the taste
(and again if you belch) Freezing it first helps but I
still can't stand it LOL

The 100 total is excellent, the 28 is low. Long moderate cardio exercise can help, and eating foods higher in niacin may make a difference.

You should not notice your breathing while exercising. You can exercise hard with a high heart rate but breathing easily if you are in very good physical condition. My heart rate goes as high as 150-160 (but usually 120-140) and my breathing remains easy. I know to slow down rather than force it.

Something you can do for an 30-60 minutes. You might consider a heart rate monitor. Time to cool off when the heart rate starts to drift upwards after a long period at the same rate. The drift upwards means the heart is starting to fatigue.

Have you ever considered Acupuncture and Chinese medicine? I realize that this form of treatment has only been around a few thousand years compared to less than 200 hundred years for our modern western medicine, but you may want to seriously consider it. I had high total cholesterol, LDL, & Triglycerides, After about 6 weeks of treatment and use of chineses medicines my total cholesterol was down to 202, Triglycerides 195 to 74, HDL went from 55 to 81, LDL from 242 to 107. This with no consistent exercise program. Can it work for you? Call some acupuncturists in your area and investigate the possibilities.
