Too much sugar is being consumed in a day. Think about it, think about what you eat daily and look at the labels. How come baked beans have sugar and salt? The list is endless of what they call the 'hidden' sugar. As for diabetes, as long as you watch your sugar intake and you exercise, outside of having a genetic disposition, or falling foul of a autoimmune condition, no one should become diabetic. Unfortunately it is on the increase due to people not watching the sugar and not exercising.
