Do you fear getting HIV/AIDS? or is it just everyday illness? I am preoccupied w/ HIV. Reading on hypochondriasis, most concerns are w/ cancer and sicknesses like that but mine is HIV! Anyone else fear this?

I have been tested every 3 months for the last 9 months and I haven't had unprotected sex w/ anyone in that time frame and I certainly am not an IV drug user!

Your problem isn't with HIV and AIDS, it's with your PSYCHOLOGICAL condition. Many people who are hypochondriacs like you are also obsessive compulsive. Perhaps instead of posting questions about your irrational fear of HIV, you should seek treatment for the hypochondria.

Find a therapist who specializes in OCD. You may need therapy. You may even need some medications to keep your fears from taking over.

Posting to Y!A about freaking out over HIV doesn't help alleviate your fear, and only serves to stigmatize the people who do live with the infection.

Agh, I'm probably the worst hypochondriac ever. I fear everything that can make me ill. ...Even things that can't, like commitment. But HIV has to be my most feared. I've been dating the same guy for 6 years now and I make him get tested for STD's, AIDS and HIV every month just in case lol. And even though he comes up clean I still make him wear a condom everytime. So no, your not alone.

HIV is actually a very commonly a preoccupation of people with obsessive complulsive disorder, which is a type of anxiety disorder in which a person experiences great fear of something they know, rationally, is of very little threat to them in reality.

Getting tested repeatedly doesn't usually help to allay the fear, because the problem is psychological, not virological.

See a psychologist who practises cognitive behavioural therapy, which is the best proven treatment for OCD and similar anxiety disorders. Medication can sometimes help as well.

About 1 in 50 people have OCD - it is very common.

My adult son has HIV and he is braveley managing to live his life very well. He DOES get MRSA easily...............but, we've learned to catch it quickly, and to get the I.V. going right away, with proper meds. He DOES get very tired, but, he works all day, comes home, eats, and goes to bed when he is extremely tired. When he's not so exhausted from a day's work, he visits friends, and lives a very nice life. He does not spend time worrying about what COULD be his next sickness. He is just happy for weeks that he seems free of other problems (health wise). I think he handles this very well. You can, too.
