It's a type of sauce, brown and semi-translucent with chunks of stuff in it (which I kinda think is potatoes, but not sure). The sauce is kind of thick and is usually kept chilled. And it's really sweet. It's usually at a condiment bar next to the yogurt sauce.

I've had it at two Indian restaurants and I really like the taste of it, but have no idea what it is. I'd just like to know for knowledge's sake. :) thanks

Chutney.

Definition: [CHUHT-nee] From the East Indian word chatni, this spicy condiment contains fruit, vinegar, sugar and spices. It can range in texture from chunky to smooth and in degrees of spiciness from mild to hot. Chutney is a delicious accompaniment to curried dishes. The sweeter chutneys also make interesting bread spreads and are delicious served with cheese.

I think what you're thinking of is Tamarind sauce, its a brown sweet/spicy sauce that is usually served with Samosas. I'm not sure about the chunks, any time I've ever had Tamarind sauce it hasn't had chunks but maybe its chunks of tamarind who knows. ;-). FYI... Tamarind is a fruit that grows on trees, and if you ever see it in real life its kind of weird, you can sometimes find it in Hispanic grocers as Tamarindo.

It is probably tamarind chutney. Tamarind is a kind of sour fruit that is used in drinks and sauces in many tropical regions. Here is a recipe for the sauce you like:
