Before I start, I know I am only asking for advice from the Yahoo Answers community and am not going to base my actions soley on the answers. But was hoping to get a little outlook on the situation, before I go for my doctors check-up 6 days from today.
I bought a blood sugar monitor; I checked my levels the first time, hours after dinner but shortly after eating a small sweet (157)...checked it the next morning before anything to eat (104)...checked it approx. 6 pm that day, after working in yard for 5 hrs. (96)....checked it today before dinner (110)...for dinner I had 2 hotdogs and a handful of Doritos and about 2 hrs later I ate 2 small pecan twirls and got a reading of (215). What do you think these readings would tell me about; is it close to diabetic or far from it. Are these readings normal or worthy of being checked for any type of diabetes? Adult male-age 41-205 lbs-5 ft 10 in.

First: about the 215 reading. You said you "about 2 hours later you ate 2 pecan twirls and got a reading of 215." Did you eat the twirls with the meal then checked your sugars 2 hours later? Or did you eat dinner, wait 2 hours, ate 2 twirls, then checked your sugars a few minutes later? WIthout this information, no one can tell you anything about a reading of 215.
Second: There is absoultely no such thing as "pre-diabetes". You can be "at risk for" diabetes, but you cannot be "pre". It's like saying your pre-heart disease; there's no such thing. You are "at risk for heart disease."
Third: You are diagnosed as a diabetic when two fasting readings show glucose over 200. Everyone's blood sugar rises after eating (EVERYONE, diabetic or not). That's why there is the "after 2 hours" rule. It takes about 2 hours (depending on the individual) for (1) the brain to register a rise in blood sugars, (2) the brain sends the message to the pancreas, (3) the pancreas secretes insulin, (4) your blood sugars drop, (5) your brain recognizes the drop, (6) send the message to the pancreas, (7) the pancreas stops producing insulin, (8) your blood sugars get back to normal.
Fourth: Food is not the only thing that raises blood sugars. Stress, illness, or anything that is "unusual" in your daily routine will create a rise in sugars.
For your question: With the readings you posted here, you probably don't have anything to worry about. Some days I would kill for those readings.

I was diabetic with 3 of my pregnancies and my father is diabetic also. u should have a doctor check you levels because 215 is high normal range is fasting around 80 and 1 hour after a meal should be around 110. But i am not sure if it varies for each person. good luck cut out your sweets and lower your carbs and see what your levels do. Do a morning test and 1 hour after each meal and see your levels. Just in case you don't know 15 grams of carbs = 1 carb and i was allowed 2 in the am, 1 for am snack, 2 for lunch, 1 for afternoon snack, 3 for dinner and a bedtime snack was 1 carb also. at bedtime try to make sure you get in a protein because that carries you sugar through the night. remember that carrots, peas, potatoes, rice and pasta oh and beans are a starch that is where you carbs come into your diet also breads and cereal. Sorry if i confused u hope that some of this will help. But contact you doctor and let him know what's going on so he can schedule you a sugar test.

What is a random blood sugar test? A random blood sugar test measures your blood sugar at any point in time, not necessarily a certain amount of time after a meal, snack or beverage. What's normal? A normal random blood sugar result is lower than 100 mg/dL. What level suggests prediabetes? If your random blood sugar level is higher than 100 mg/dL but lower than 199 mg/dL, you may have prediabetes. What level suggests type 1 or type 2 diabetes? A random blood sugar level of 200 mg/dL or higher suggests either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Remember, your blood sugar level alone isn't enough to differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Your doctor may do other tests to determine which type of diabetes you have.

You are actually "border line" pre-diabetic with your fasting figure being above 100, and after eating sugarly food rising above 200.
What you need to do is ask your doctor to give you an A1C test. Where as your blood sugar meter will give you an instanteneous figure, it is only the number RIGHT NOW. As you know, your blood sugar swings widely. A1C test will give you a weighted average figure for the last 3 months.
It would be a better indicator for your situation.

Hi, u are pre diabetic, If u lost just alittle weight it would help u . maybe 25 pounds. they like u to keep ur sugars between 90 to 130. My Dr, also told me to stay away from hotdogs, it will run up sugars. anyway when u check ur sugars do it 2hrs after a meal. dont eat raisens either. I hope this helps, I am type 1 and I hate to see people with type 2, who can fix this by weight and diet, and dont take it serious, u dont want type 1, very hard to control I follow weight watchers diet just to keep my sugars regulated the best I can. good luck.

From a standpoint of a diabetic (2) for 15 years, I can tell you that if you eat properly and perform a some form of exercse you will be OK (as seen by your junk diet). Eliminate the Doritos and hot dogs and stick with fruit and vegetables.
See a nutrionist and/or a Endrocrinologist.
