Genital warts can take several months and even years to appear after a person has contracted HPV. Some people will never get genital warts from their HPV. There are over 120 different kinds of HPV; about 30 of them are sexually transmitted. Only some of the 30 different kinds of HPV actually cause genital warts.
I have personally had HPV for over 6 years. I developed genital warts from my HPV about a year ago. It took me about 5 years for the warts to appear on me.
***Also, some people answering this question are obviously confusing genital herpes with genital warts which are NOT the same thing. Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. Genital warts are caused by HPV (Human Papillomavirus). They are NOT the same virus.

Typically after first being infected with herpes, it takes anywhere from 10 days to 21 days for the infection to show up.
However, because the symptoms can be quite mild with some people, they may not realize they have it. As well herpes is sometimes mistaken for hemmoroids.
This link here will give you more information on the herpes simplex.
