I got it -Type 2. Short and quick - Watch your diet, keep your weight down, and exercise. Nothing you can do will guarantee that you will not develop it but do the above and the odds for not getting it should be in your favor.

Eat right, exercise daily, keep your weight in check. This is the best way to prevent or at least prolong the onset of type 2 diabetes. And, yes, sugar is a problem. Stay away from candy and other sugary junk. Also, carbs turn into sugar in your body. Avoid products made from bleached flour (white bread, pasta, crackers) and opt for whole grain ones instead.
You should stick to fruits, veggies, lean meats and low-fat dairy, and whole grains. Avoid fried foods most of the time, a cheat now and then is okay, but not all the time. Use sweet-n-low or splenda in drinks, or nothing at all, but no sugar.
Again, this can help prolong it, but no matter how good you are, you may get it anyway. Type 2 diabetes goes back several generations in my family on both sides, back to a time when there was no such thing as processed food and all this junk food. And none of the people who have had it have been overweight - in fact, some of them were pretty skinny. So for some of us there's only so much we can do, but do your best!

It sounds as if you are talking about type 2 diabetes. The 'cause' of type 1 diabetes is fairly well understood. The genetic markers are known and it is present in 50% of twins. Unfortunately - the genetics of type 2 diabetes is much stronger although very poorly understood. Diabetes is not caused by what you eat thus eating glucose (refined carbohydrates or sugars) does not lead to diabetes. Maintaining a body mass index between 18.5 and 25 kg/M2 (your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared - if you do not wish to calculate this on your own - type 'body mass index' into any search engine and you will have dozens of sites that will calculate the number for you), eating a sensible well balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and maintaining an exercise program are your best options. There is however no way to truly 'prevent' diabetes. The good news is that our advances in the of diabetes over the past 5 years have been truly remarkable and the next 5 years are expected to be just as exciting. Wishing you the very best in health - j

Do a diet to control your consumption of sugar and carbs.
- Low calorie diets
This can be the best diets for diabetes patients, as described by Patty Latham, M.S., R.D., registered dietician
Provided that the diet restricts calorie intake and suggesting a high nutrition intake daily, lower levels of fasting insulin, fasting glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol can be attained.
Low calorie diets can also directly lower your excess fats and sugar. So this makes a good diet for diabetics that should manage their weight and also sugar level.
A low calorie fad diet won't make a good diet for longer term. Fad diets are short term diets that cater the quick weight loss but you can't do the fad diets forever.

Mattopai is right on. If you suspect you are eligible for this insidious disease Type 2 you can avoid it by keeping your weight down, excercising, and watching your diet. Low carbs will be your way of life.
Weigh the alternative. It is a no brainer. There are plenty of resources out there to help you. I think everyone will agree on this. You do not want this disease.

mattopai is right for type 2
for type 1 though there is nothing you can do to prevent it. type one is usually genetic though and diagnosed when your young
eating too much sugar doesnt cause diabetes. being overweight is a main factor in developing type 2. eating too much sugar= possibly being overweight= increased chance of developing type 2
