I have been altering my eating habits to exclude red meat. I can tell that I am not getting enough protein (lethargy) but I have no idea how to increase my protein intake without adding a ton of calories or harmful byproducts with it. Any suggestions?

Well, lethargy isn't generally a symptom of a lack of protein. It's more likely due to a lack of carbohydrates, too few calories, not enough vitamins (are you eating enough fruits and veggies?), poor sleep quality, or drinking too much alcohol. You say you've only excluded red meat, so I really don't see how you'd reduce your protein intake that much if you're still eating other animal foods.

Anyway, non meat sources of protein include beans, nuts, lentils, seeds, quinoa, buckwheat, tofu, tempeh, and seitan (wheat gluten).

Good luck.

Beans, tofu, lentils, nuts, peanut butter, and soymilk are all packed with protein. If you like meat products, you can get "fake" meat like seitan, soydogs, veggie burgers, etc. Try looking for Morning Star Farms, Amy's, Smart, Boca, Loma Linda, etc. because they have a wide variety of mock meats. However, if you're more into raw foods you should stick with the beans and peanut butter... also, whole wheat breads have some good protein also, although it isn't as much.

You should try to get non meat protein in the form of a complex protein. Example the combination of beans and rice will give you a complex protein. The best non meat protein out there though come from the south American grain Quinoa. you can find in in most grocery stores and you can do anything to it that you would do with rice.

You are mistaken. Protein is in everything and the non red meats you eat provide more then you even need. I eat no flesh at all and get what I need from grains, nuts, beans, veggies etc. Most people get too much protein as it is.

You should eat nuts, beans, soy products, and tofu. Try substituting tofu for meat in stir-frys and eat a handful of almonds, walnuts, pecans, soy nuts (my favorite!) for a snack, these nuts are kind of high cal. but they fill you up fast and keep you full. Oh, cottage cheese is much more protein than dairy, is low calorie, and tastes excellent mixed with pineapple, peaches, or really any fruit.

most americans eat 150% of their daily protein. lethargy may be a symptom of vitamin difficiency, too much caffiene, poor sleep or dehydration.
if you really want just extra protien in your diet the easiest "whey" to go is protein shakes. you can just mix 2T. of whey protein into a cup of water. add fruit, chocolate syrup, peanut butter and mix. When this is my breakfast, it keeps me going until lunch.
