I have been dating my girlfriend for over a year and she has herpes. i am scared of getting it too. I take a few preventative measures. I will not have sex without a condom, if she feels even the slightest itch, or within three days of her last sore healing. she takes valtrex. what more can I do? should I take valtrex also? Are there any supplements that may help from getting it?

No, there are no supplements. And Valtrex won't do anything for you unless you HAVE the herpes simplex virus. It won't keep you from getting it. It only helps prevent outbreaks for someone who already has it.

You're doing all you can. Condoms ARE the best protection.

1- Don't have sex during an active outbreak.
2- Dont't have sex when she is having symptoms of an outbreak.
3- Don't take Valtrex unless you have the virus (it won't do you any good).
4- It has been proven that people who take Valtrex daily as suppresive therapy reduce transmission rates significantly.

The drawback is that it is quite expensive but she can get on a generic brand. So an answer to reduce the risk of transmission is to combine all of these suggestions. The only way to prevent it is to NOT have sex.

Really, you should never have sex with her without wearing a condom. It is possible to spread the herpes virus without having an outbreak of sores. That's the main thing. While she's having an outbreak, no nookie for you.

It sounds like she needs to be on a continual prevention medication.
If she is taking valtrex routienly all the time, then she needs to take another kind of medication. I haven't heard of the partner taking meds, but you can ask your doctor.

It sounds like you are doing al you can to avoid infection.
My only suggestion is for her to get on a daily prevention med so she doesn't have breakouts.

there is only one supplement that can keep you from getting herpes. its called, DONT HAVE SEX, if people would learn to keep their pants on and stop carrying on like dogs then we wouldnt have all of these worries. (stepping down from my soap box) honestly, how much do you like/love this girl? the odds are that your going to get it. you can pull the trigger just so many times until the hammer lands on a loaded cylinder.
