Type 1 daibetes has an extremely strong genetic component. It is less clear with Type 2, but people with several family members who have Type 2 are much more likely to develop it than those who have no family history of the disease. That does not mean that you CAN'T get it if nobody in your family has had it, just that it's much less likely.

No You Cannot get Diabetes out of thin air. It is strictly from either an unhealthy lifestyle such as obesity, Not taking care of yourself basically, or hereditary. Just because no one in your immediate family does not have it does not mean that it is not in you ancestry somewhere and it could work its way to the surface. I have dealt with the disease for almost 3 years now but I had a healthy lifestyle besides smoking, altho it was on both sides of my family. It skipped one generation with my parents but I did get it. I have a very prominent family history of diabetes tho. Hope this helped.

Both type 1 & 2 are autoimmune diseases.Yes, you can get either one at any time.

Type 2 is associated with being overweight but not all the time.It is also much easier to get with a family history. The majority of people with diabetes are type 2.Sometimes diet and exercise help, sometimes oral meds and sometimes a combo of all three are needed.
Type 1 can develop any time but many get it in childhood. This is when your pancrease shuts down it's insulin production and you need insulin injections for the rest of your life.
Good question.

I've just been diagnosed diabetic,i gave up smoking 8 months ago & put on more weight than average.I attributed this to quitting, even tho' i didn't over-compensate with food, my weight rocketed, then i was diagnosed with an under-active thyroid, hence explaining the surplus weight, which is now coming off (thank goodness)I have no family history of diabetes either, but understand lots of it is due to overweight, poor diet & lack of exercise as suggested.

You can, depends on your weight and how well your body processes sugar. Type 1 diabetes is all insulin-based, it's when your body doesn't produce enough or just can't process it at all. Type 2 is weight-related, and can go away with weight loss and proper diet. Diabetes isn't always genetic, it can just happen, so if you think you have it you ought to get tested.

Diabetes is usually associated with your family history and is rare in people who do not have a family history of it but is suppose if you do not take care of your health and self it may be possible.

if someone is overweight and does not exercise, they can still be at high risk of getting diabetes, even if there is no family history......so just exercise and maintain a healthy weight and you should be fine

Yes you can get it out of thin air. Too much fat and sugars in your diet will do it. Most acloholics are diabetics because of the fermented sugars in the booze.

There are two types of diabetes one type is because of your diet and weight and type two is because your pancreas doesn't control your blood sugar. My little cousin was diagnosed with it when she was only six. And both her parent s don't have it.
