If you've got the cough then probably your cillia, which are the tiny hairs lining your airways, are damaged and so can not do their job of clearing the naturally produced mucus. Also, you will be producing more mucus because you smoke and therefore it pools in the airways and lungs - hence the cough. However, as there is more of it sitting around then your chances of getting a chest infection increase. All this points to the possible diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and the single most effective thing you can do is give up smoking. Sadly though, once you have COPD there's no cure but it can be managed and the diseases progress 'slowed'. Good luck on quitting

As a smoker with COPD (I'm trying desperately to give up but not having much luck ) you need to understand that it starts out with just such a smokers cough and it's downhill from there. I too enjoyed smoking but that's changed and the worse my condition gets the more I curse the Fags, you might just get away with it if you give up now but if you don't then your future is inhalers and oxygen bottles, repeated chest infection's , frequent Hospital visits continual Doctors appointments and an inability to walk more than a few feet without gasping for breath. You can't get rid of a smokers cough and continue smoking anyone that tells you otherwise is deluding themselves and lying to you. Good Luck

I go to the gym every day and do a very rigorous exercise for 45 minutes. That's probably why I haven't got a smokers cough, because although I smoke about 20 a day, my lungs are in quite a good shape. Having said that, chemical smells (like cleaning fluids, hairsprays, some cheap perfume) can choke me to death. I don't know why that is though, it's nothing to do with smoking because when I quit in the past for a couple of years I still had that. You could also try some herbal cough syrups that can make your voice really nice so if you want to sing (and even if you are a non-smoker) I would still recommend taking that regularly.

You don't do anything. You respect their decision. That's why they are parents, and you're the kid. They earned that right. If my sister or myself stole my father's cigarettes, we would have got the belt. So be careful with your decision. Everyone back in my day smoked. All my friends parents did, my grandparents did, my parents friends did. I'm still living, and so are they. As for costing them years? My grandparents are 87 and 83 and have been smoking for over 60 years. If that were true, your statement would put them living till around 120. I seriously doubt that. If anything were to take their lives away, it would be quitting. They would go through serious withdrawals. At their ages, they can't afford that.

If you can't quit cutting down is better than nothing a few less cigarettes is a few less smoked. Other than that and what you don't want to hear there isn't much you can do. Your body and your lungs are trying to tell you something even if you don't want to hear.

Used To Smoke (gave up august)

Cutting down will definatly help. But having a smokers cough is your body telling you that you are putting alot of strain on it!
maybe cut down to 15 if you can.
A smokers cough will eventually relax, but if you continue to keep on smoking, you will always have a cough like that.

Please think about quitting, i know you cant make no one quit unless they want to, but i found a fantastic site called www.quitnet.com (forum) on there i found a good poster type of thing, (its on my 360) It really make you think. maybe one day you will want to quit, remember that site as it was a massive help to me with thousands of quitters around the world on there.

If you do/can cut down to 15 a day, keep it up, dont go back to 20.

I was on 20 a day too, ive saved £700 so far and saved 3 weeks of my life!

I hope maybe one day you will think about quitting before anything horrible happens.

Good Luck - you WILL need it!

Oh and by the way, baccy is better then ciggies, baccy has less chemicals then ciggies. Read up on google what kind of chemicals and what they are used for that you are inahling into your lungs, its quite suprising!

I smoke!

What i do when i start to cough is, the no of cigarettes automatically come down, this is natural.
I also use Vick's cough drops this clears the irritation .
I also draw slowly on the cigarette, this reduces the irritation especially when it is due to dryness.

Try this swallowing a gulp of air into the stomach helps to oxidize the acid there this helps to reduce the dryness in the throat area.

Sorry once smoker's cough starts to be a problem it suggests you have at least got the early stages of COPD. 100% of patients who have this and continue to smoke get worse. It is one of the few medical absolutes.
