Only, the healthy human heart of a brain-dead organ donor can be transplanted.
Most organ donors are people who suffer from a head injury that results in brain death. Brain death is a condition where the brain has permanently stopped working, as determined by a physician.
Artificial support systems may temporarily maintain functions such as heartbeat and breathing, but not permanently. These may be people who have had a stroke, traumatic head injury due to a car accident or fall, or a brain tumor that has not metastasized.
There are two ways to pronounce death. Death may be pronounced when a person's heart stops beating or when the person's brain stops functioning (brain death).
Brain death occurs when blood, and the oxygen it carries, cannot flow to the brain. The person's heart still beats and provides blood and oxygen to the rest of the body, as long as the person remains on a ventilator, or breathing machine. Because these functions remain intact, brain dead people can qualify as organ donors
Because many people who might think they cannot donate are good donor candidates, it is important that you sign a donor card and, above all, let your family know your wishes.

Nope, the heart of a person, is only usable, if the heart is still beating at the moment of the "harvesting"....If the person has ceased to live, and the heart has stopped, the tissue of the heart will be also dead and useless by lack of oxygen perfusion after 5 minutes.....That heart cannot be used as a transplant organ....

the window for 4-6 hours. that means after they harvest the heart (most of the time from someone who's brain dead from accident or other problems) they have to perform the surgery with 4-6 hours. Just FYI different organs have different time frame, for kidney can be preserve as long as 72 hours, but best time for transplant is within 24 hrs

Techinally, the body still has to be alive. It still has to function in order to have oxygenated blood pumped through it. Without this, the heart muscle will die. Heart transplants are usually harvested from a person's body who is brain dead, or the body is using mechanical intervention in order to function.

well...people can do kidney and liver transplants, why not heart transplants. the heart is preserved in ice and when read the transplant can be made. when you get open heart surgery you are practially dead until they put the heart back in and pump it again why not with another heart. also not all the time we can use a human heart it has been replaced in a human with a pigs heart.
