Yes they are doctors, yes they do something important, they are responsible for keeping you alive while you are under anesthetic and making sure you don't feel anything. I dare you to tell them they don't do anything important right before they're supposed to put you to sleep......
They have to get an M.D. and then they do a specialty in anesthesia just like a cardiologist goes into a cardiology specialty after med school.

Anesthesiologists are doctors. They have completed medical school plus 4 more years of training.

There may be some confusion because there are also nurse anesthetists who provide anesthesia. These are nurses who have done extra training in anesthesia. Sometimes they work under the supervision of a doctor, but sometimes they are a little more independent.

Anesthesiologists do a lot of very important things. They make sure you are comfortable during surgery and they make sure you are safe during surgery. They also do other things around the hospital, such as providing epidurals to women in labor, giving pain medication to people after surgery, sedating children who need to have studies like CT scans, and taking care of people in intensive care units.

Yes, an anesthesiologist is a licensed doctor. They put patients to sleep who are going to have surgery or some kind of procedure done where they need to be anesthetised. They monitor vital signs while the patient is under.
