I am throwing a surprise 40th birthday party for my husband and I am renting a banquet room at a hotel. I was reading the contract, and it mentions not being able to hang or tape any decorations to the wall or ceiling. If I do, there will be an additional charge. So, how can I still include decorations withing hanging them?

Ok this might sound odd, but the colors are basically that of something from the 70's. Which can be pretty cool. You can make tiny little chinese lanters out of crepe paper to hang off the string of lights, you can do a mod theme, kinda like laugh in( oh my showing my age), hanging the lights, xmas lights are pretty much stuck in a row, you can take and wrap the lights around nails that have been hammered into a board into what ever design you want, just dont staple them to the board or you could cause a fire hazard. If you have a child size pool you could fill it with water and then add some colorful plastic fish, to match the colors you are setting out. You could do a hawaiian theme with grass skirts made of colored cellophane. You have endless design options. Hope this helps.

Put the decorations on the tables. Also, is there a screen available? You can put the screen up at the front of the hall - and show slides of your husband (from childhood to adulthood).
If you know PowerPoint, you have the slides go continuously throughout the party. If you don't have PowerPoint, maybe at some point during the evening, you can show them at dinner time.

Just an idea.

Decorate all of the space (table, chairs, etc) and skip the walls. Or, you could also use balloons to fill the space. If you weighted them, so they stay in one place, you could line them along the walls (even tie ribbons/crepe paper between them) without actually putting anything on the walls.

I don't see any mention that you can't use nails. Head over to Home Depot and pick up a nail gun. Make your husband's 40th birthday something to remember by plastering the room with pictures of his ex wife
