I´m cooking a recipe with fresh clams and it says to scrub and rinse the clams before cooking. This my first time cooking with fresh shellfish so I´m not to sure what they mean by scrubbing?

They mean get all the dirt/sand off the outside of them. Also, a clam might have some "gunk" stuck to the outside of it. If you're serving the clams in a dish, you don't want dirt and stuff to get in the rest of the food. So, scrub, using a brush, sponge, whatever, the clams until they feel clean.

It's the shells when you purchase fresh clams in the shells you need to scrub and rinse them first before you start to cook. Also remember when purchasing clams get only the ones that are closed not open! If open they are usually old and possibly rotten.

it like cleaning dishes scrub and rinse the plate, but instead u going to scrub the clams with a kitchen brush and then rinse with running water,

You want to get the dirt and sand out off the outside shell. And they might have a "beard", hairs that are coming out of the opening. You have to remove that too. It's just cleaning the outsides of them so nothing gets in the sauce. You don't have to do anything to the insides.

Just use a soft bristle brush to get off any residue, like sand, etc. before you cook them

This just means to wash the shells make sure there is nothing stuck on them sand, barnacles etc......(and change the water several times)
