Your answer will vary according to the factors that you would like to include. For example, HIV rates will vary by city, province or state and nation. Further, there tends to be higher concentration areas which also impact on mathematical formulas to determine the answer for the question that you asked.

For example, in Canada, more than half of all HIV cases for the province of Ontario are in Toronto. There is a disproportionate number of cases because it is the largest city, an economic centre and host to the most resources in terms of health and HIV.

Depending on what you need the answer for, I would consider taking several factors into account before taking the answer to heart.

The link below is a nation by nation examination. However, some countries for political and religious reasons refuse to acknowledge the presence of HIV in their populations.

HIV ranges from less than 1% to close to 40% of populations.

So -- 1 to 4 out of 10.

Statistics are a tricky thing. What population are you talking about? What year? Any particular region?
An estimated 38.6 million people worldwide were living with HIV in 2005. So, if you asking how many world wide, it would be a lot less that one out of every ten.

I don't know. Why don't you do what the CDC does and pluck a number out of thin air and assume that it's correct.....
