Thanks to all for answering; I have also discovered that lack of use of the calf muscles can lead to pain upon more-than-usual exertion.
Does anyone agree with this?

I agree that it is possible. There are lots of causes of calf pain. However, I think people are focusing on the blocked arteries (as you did in your other question) because it is a very serious condition. Only a doctor, seeing you in person, can tell you what the cause of your own calf pain is. Good luck, and I hope it is nothing serious.

intermittent claudication is due to disease of artery called Raynauds disease, and the patient will be a chronic smoker.
only in old sedentary subjects do you get deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and can be a cause of calf muscles.
Potassium and calcium deficiency can also cause muscular pain.
Hence agreed with you if the block is partial in case of complete
blockage depending on the vessels there will be gangrene.

Under use, then excessive use of any muscle will cause pain. Use gentle exercise gradually building up strength and endurance to make the muscles stronger.
