A good friend invited my husband and I over for dinner with her family and I don't want to show up empty handed. Wine or beer is obviously out of the question, and so is a dish, because she's a way better cook than me (and I'm outta time).
Any ideas guys? 10 points for best gift!!

Thanks so much guys - all great ideas, and I'm thinking we'll bring some sparkling cider.
Thanks for the pointer about the chocolate - I would have never thought of that!!

You could try non-alcoholic "wine". It's actually sparkling grape or apple juice in a wine bottle.

Why don't you ask her? Don't say "What can I bring?" say something like "Could I bring a tossed salad?" or "Could I bring a dessert?" or the drinks or something. Or maybe some kind of appetizer, or bread.

Bon Appetit!

Someone suggested sparkling wine which you already said was out, and of course we all know that Mormons don't drink alcohol. ummmm... And bring your own meat when invited to dinner? Don't think so.

But you don't want a recipe either because you're pressed for time. Hopefully you have time to shop for something. Some ideas:

1. A nice bouquet of flowers. Some markets have some very nice, and very fresh selections. I would always appreciate flowers.

2. A pre-made cheese tray that has a nice selection of cheeses and sometimes meats and some nice gourmet crackers.

3. A tray made up of a selection of nuts (sometimes with dried fruits).

All these things can usually be purchased in the same place... a good grocery store. So there are some very different choices... all sure to be appreciated. The nuts are a good choice. If they don't need to serve them because they've already got plenty of appetizers, they could always just use them for themselves. But nuts are usually a safe bet for before OR after a meal, and likely they'd put them out anyway.

Any of those things would be appreciated.

Alcohol and caffeine are not any-no's. usually, once you're invited to a meal at a persons' homestead you're taking a hostess/host present as hostile to an part of the meal (until eventually you're requested to convey something). Many hostesses plan a meal really heavily exceptionally for a particular day like Easter. they don't continuously savor their menu being "messed with" or their dessert being "upstaged" through a targeted visitor bringing something even as they were not requested to. you're perfect to both call and ask if you may want to convey something or merely convey a hostess present (decrease vegetation, spring vegetation for the backyard, some selfmade jam, a pair of hand-knit dishcloths tied in a quite ribbon, etc.). The sky's the reduce...yet do not take nutrition until eventually you ask or were requested.

Try this: Bring over a fancy pasta jar with a box of high quality pasta. Then the jar will be used as a countertop decor, the pasta will get eaten and the gesture will be nice. Or if you want a recipe - bring dessert. I would go with nut-goodie bars. 1 bag chocolate chips (semi sweet), mixed and melted with 1 bag butterscotch chips. Add half jar Jiff crunchy Peanut butter. Mix in half a bag of mini marshmallows let marsh. melt almost all the way. Take the mixture and pour into pan and cool in fridge. take 1 cup butter and other half of bag of marshmallows and add 1 bag of butterscothch chips or m&Ms. Melt partially. Spread (like frosting) over hardened chocolate mixture. chill, cut up into squares and serve.
Since you said you are out of time,
I would bring over a centerpiece of flowers, fruit and chocolate. Stop by any floral shop on the way, they should have something nice. Don't worry about it. Mormons are fun, I am one!

What about a game for after dinner? My friends know I like to do all of the cooking, so they usually bring a game, like outburst, dominos, cards, or taboo. Its always fun!

Fruit of some sort will also work. I am not a Mormon, but know what you say is true. If you want to get on well iwth them, then you will not bring alcohol or tobacco to the house!

Obviously no alcohol, and nothing with caffeine...including chocolate. I like the idea of flowers and picking up a nice non-chocolate dessert if their strict Mormons.
