Antibiotics. For the congestion you might want to try a saline nasal spray like Ocean Spray

You need antibiotics if you have an infection. Also, Dr. Oz on Oprah was on a day or 2 ago and was talking about nasal lavage. You put a slightly warm salt water solution (should be a normal saline solution at 0.9%) into the nostril with your head tilted so that the unused nostril is pointed down and to the side. The water will drain out of the other side of the nostril so you should do it over a pan to catch it. I think that is the way they said it worked. Look at her website and search for it. If you look at this site now the link is on the home page to watch her show. He explains how it is done on there. They called it something other than nasal lavage but that is what it is. That is the bottom link. The 1st link has some things you can do to prevent symptoms in the future. If for some reason you cannot connect to those links, just search for nasal lavage. Anyway, it is supposed to help clean out the sinuses. Take Care.

Edit: Just wanted to add after reading other posts: if you are having a lot of pain; draining mucus that isn't clear, but is thick yellow or green, etc... you must see a doc for antibiotics. Don't continue to self treat at that point. Because the infection is so close to your brain you always have to worry about the infection going there, becoming septic. Sepsis, when bacteria gets in the bloodstream, will kill. It is a very difficult thing to treat and many people do not survive once it reaches a certain point (septic shock). So don't mess around with your health. If you are certain it's an infection go to the doc tomorrow. While sepsis and infection in the brain are not the most common thing, you just don't know if it'll happen to you. Like I had a dental infections that I let go too long; nothing happened and eventually i got antibiotics and things were fine. But recently on the news an 11 year old child died from a tooth infection. I also saw a women die in my critical care rotation from what started out as a urinary infection. She was refusing to go to the doc. She was only in her 50's. So just be safe. Sorry, but didn't think I would be doing my job if I didn't let you know the risks. Good Luck

Antibiotics! :D Last year I had three sinus infections (like, BAD ones) -- we're talking CT scans here) and getting antibiotics from my doc knocked them out.

Since a sinus infection is different from a cold, it's impossible to take care of it on your own if it's bad enough. DO NOT take anything with an antihistamine! At the doctor's they told me that they "dry things up" and any drainage you would have (which would unstuff your nose) would not happen.

Ok, I'm gonna butcher the spellings, but

Take:

Pseudaphedrine.
Pain killer.
Loratadine (Branded as Alavert or Claritin)

At night take antihistamine or Benedril.
The stuff that makes you tired helps the most.

Use saline nasal spray.

Use a hot steamer at night.

If that hasn't worked after 10 days, or you're getting worse every day, you'll have to get antibiotics.

I have had sinus infections all my life and my ENT gave me Neilmed Sinus Rinse and a Z pack(antibiotic) and that helps me more than anything.(You can get the rinse at some drug stores now) It is also good when you have a cold to keep down infection and lessen the symptons.
