Depressed persons who smoke cigarettes may be at increased risk of cancer and other diseases, according to new research.

The combination of depression and cigarette smoking contributes to increased white blood cell count and a decline in the activity of natural killer cells (NK) that fight off tumors, the study demonstrated.

the bottom line
Smoking affects both your antibodies (a group of chemicals that circulate in the blood stream) and your cells that attack foreign substances.

Every person can help their own immune system. There are some easy ways of doing this. Make sure that the natural exits from the body for toxins are kept open. This includes ensuring that the bowels function daily, drinking adequate pure water so that the urine flow is clear (at least five pints of water a day) and cleaning the sweat from your body daily with a bath or clean cloths. Remember, you need to sweat a few times a week whether its from exercise, a sauna, sex or menopausal hot flashes, or just the hot weather of summer. Breathing easily and deeply in an unrestricted way is important - exercise can help you do that.

You can find many more tips at the last website I listed.

You've gotten a lot of great answers already. No one has mentioned this, but low fat foods, and sugar free sodas may be very unhealthy for you and you should avoid them! Read the label of everthing you eat. Don't eat anything with any hydrogenated oil, artificial fat like olestra or margarine, and don't eat anything with artificial sweetners like sucralose or Nutrasweet. Putting man-made substances in your body is usually a stress that weakens the immune system. Eat only the purest foods. Shop at Whole Foods Market or Trader Joes. People that have weakened immune systems need extra dosages of vitamin C and other anti-oxidants. Get a buffered kind, like Ester-C, so that you can take a bunch without getting an upset stomach. Also, don't forget that you need a little sunshine to activate your vitamin D. Get plenty of sleep, be as positive as you can, and avoid stress as much as you can.

Yes. Smoking impairs your immune system, and your body's ability to heal after an injury. (It decreases blood circulation, which is very important to healing.)

Vitamin C is essential to a healthy immune system. So is exercise. But if you have a healthy immune system, adding vitamins will not necessarily make it stronger.

There are even studies that suggest that being happily married is good for your immune system.

Are there any reasons to smoke? NO, Black/Yellow Tar filled lungs, yellow fingers, premature ageing, respiratory problems, it does also weaken your immune system along with just about everything else in your body and slowly but painfully kills you. If you do smoke STOP, if you don't it is not advisable to start!!

LOOK at the websites below they've got some pictures of smokers and non smokers lungs, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!

I really don't think smoking has anything to do with your immune system. I think its all genetic. I know people who smoke a pack a day and never get a sniffle and people who run 5 miles a day & eat nothing but healthy food and there is always something bothering them.
If you want to boost your immune systen try Vitamins (c, b12..etc) and Omega3 and antioxidants...etc.

Smoking slowly kills every cell in your system, notice when people feel ill they smoke less? because it makes you worse, eating a balanced diet will keep you immune sytem as high as necessary, vitamin c and zinc are good for a temporary boost! Try airbourne, apparently it was designed by a 2nd grade teacher to keep her free from illness from the snotty kids she taught...
