...runny nose, irritated throat, and some throat and chest congestion. Tonight, I continue to have the runny nose, headache, cough and am coughing up mucus. Any idea what this could be and why/how it came on so suddenly? It really hit me out of nowhere today and made me feel awful so fast.

I live in the southeast and was outdoors when it started, so the ragweed could definitely be the culprit. Thanks for all of the thoughts/answers guys.

those aren't allergy symptoms, those are symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, probably viral. Get yourself some Zicam nasal swabs, follow the package directions, drink lots and lots of fluids, get lots of rest, take tylenol for body aches, a simple cough syrup at night so you can sleep, and do everyone a favor and stay HOME, don't spread it around.
See a doctor if you develop a fever greater than 103.0, that could indicate a secondary bacterial infection that would respond to antibiotics. (viruses do not respond to antibiotic)

I got hit with the same thing today and called the health department and they said it was ragweed. It hit like a ton of bricks but I didn't think ragweed because it has rained for three days. I have hives and a bad headache and I stayed home today. I am taking Benadryl every 4 or 5 hours to help the nose, throat and chest. Best of luck to you!! I hope you get through the season without all of this misery.

It is definitely the time of year for allergies. Mine are always worst in the spring when trees are budding.
It's easy to figure out if it is an allergy, and also to get rid of the discomfort. I take a children's dose of antihistamine, if I have an allergy, it goes away. I sometimes only need half a children's dose, I think even a very small amount of antihistamine is more effective than taking a regular adult dose, and I don't much like taking medications. This works for me.Good luck.

Maybe it isn't an allergy, maybe you have a cold or the flu or some other virus. Maybe something was moved and a bunch of dust got in the air. Maybe the plants that just started blooming or pollinating or whatever are what you're allergic to. Maybe they just started to mow the grass and thats what you're allergic to.

Its hard to say if its allergies or not, you just have to see what you're around and see if they go away in a while or not. If they're driving you too crazy see your doctor.

Well, without knowing anything about where you live, we couldn't possibly know----- the sore throat makes me think that this might actually be a viral or bacterial thing. You might just be fighting off a bug; but in the meantime, consider visiting an allergist to have yourself tested.

This sounds like the flu to me. It usually comes on all of a sudden. Do you have chills and fever? If it i the flu and you go to the doctor right away he can give you something. If you wait there is nothing that they can do. I hope that you feel better.
