My dad went for his annual check up and a "shadow" was found in his chest xray, which showed nothing last year. He had been a smoker for 40 year and just quitted about 3 years ago. Is there any possiblities other than the obvious one? I am really worried. Thanks a lot

A shadow indicates some type of abnormality, not necessarily lung cancer. What does the doctor say? It could be pneumonia, bronchitis, or any other type of lung disease, or even nothing serious at all. Usually the X-ray is taken to rule out the more serious conditions. It's okay to be prepared for the worst case scenario, but don't automatically jump to conclusions until you get the radiologist's report. Good luck! I hope it is nothing serious.

Yes it could be as simple as the x-ray film was corrupt and it does happen. Remember the film has to be developed and while they like to try and get it right, sometimes the developing goes wrong. Likewise it could be the x-ray machine or position was not correct. If they were 'concerned' they would have sent your Dad to a Consultant.
