It's not necessarily cheaper to become a vegetarian. If you compare the cost of good quality veg with cheap processed meat that a lot of meat eaters eat, then it's probably more expensive.
However, good quality meat is a lot more expensive than vegetables and vegetarian alternatives, particularly if you buy seasonal produce. You can also grow your own veg very easily if you have enough space.
The vegetarian diet is also cheaper environmentally as well, as long as you buy local produce that's not travelled half-way round the world! Think of all that methane those cows produce!! And all the land that is needed for animals. I read a statistic somewhere about one field being able to feed loads of people if it were used for veggies, but only a few people if used to rear animals.

Well I dont know about that. The cost of vegetarian things, pies for example, can be a lot more expensive than a meat pie. It annoys me cos Im vegetarian and I can spend a fortune on vegetarian fake meat products, while the real meat product wouldnt cost half as much.

If you buy staple items in bulk and find the good priced produce sections (farmer's markets or other stores) it can be cheaper. Rice (20lbs for under $10), noodles (5lbs under $3), beans (cheap), tofu ($1 a pack), potatoes (5-10lbs for a few $), oatmeal, and these types of items are cheap. Incredibly cheap in many cases.

I then buy canned foods in bulk to get them cheap since they store for a long time. Then I find the lowest cost produce places (either warehouse place or specialty farmer/Asian market).

Your general supermarket is rarely the cheapest place to buy food, that is why other stores are gaining customers (warehouse club or Wal-Mart or "Super" Target types of places).

I rarely buy the processed foods (veggie burgers, etc..).

To promote Hunger Awareness Week, Governor Kulongoski of Oregon, agreed to live on $21/week for food (what the average food stamp user gets.)

He went shopping along with a mother on food stamps to help him pick out food.

Here is what he purchased:

3 Bananas (.66)
2 Zucchini (1.10)
2 Cup-O-Noodles (.67)
1 Gallon of Milk (1.00 – on clearance)
1 Can of Garbanzo Beans (.79)
1 Can of Kidney Beans (.49)
1 10 lb of Potatoes (.99)
1 Can of Tomatoes (.59)
1 Jar of Peanut Butter (2.50)
1 Jar of Grape Jelly (1.89)
1 Large Container of Plain Yogurt (1.25)
1 Small Chicken (3.06)
3 Boxes of Macaroni and Cheese (1.00)
1 Package of Imitation Cheese Slices (.99)
1 Loaf of Bread (1.00 – with coupon)
1 Box of Granola (2.99)
Total: $20.97

What I found to be interesting was how little meat he ended up buying (the chicken and the cup of noodles.)

He would have been even better off had he chose to be vegetarian. Instead of the chicken, he could have bought a couple of pounds of rice and a couple of pounds of pinto beans (dry) and had a lot more food. Or he could have purchased more produce.

Veggies are more reasonably priced than animal flesh. But if you really want to save money, cut out the pre-made foods & junk food. You will be surprised at how much healthier you are & how much less you spend at the grocery store or even a resturant.

If you shop sensibly you can save a lot of money.

Example: A bag of dried soya mince will make many portions when rehydrated and is cheaper than animal mince.

Meat is expensive because it takes a lot of time to produce, a lot of land and a lot of grain. For the same amount of land it takes to raise cattle you can produce a lot of grain. So in reason it's cheaper.

vegetables cost less then meat or fast food by 900%

/////Governor Kulongoski of Oregon
only had 3 bananas and 2 Zucchini and one can of tomato (59cent) which i assume its the smaller can, problly 8oz

i eat more then 3 bananas and 2 zucchini and 16 oz of tomato in one meal, i freaking eat it and am still hungry
i'm not fat, so i'm not eating too much
you're telling me, that some poor sap is gonna have to live one week on 3 banna 2 zuchi and 8 oz of can tomato as their main source of vegetable? how? that is less then what a person should take in 1 day!!!!!

the list looks great, its great to have 1 gallon of milk for only 1 dollar, because they usually cost 4
too bad food stamp is not really for food anyways

You may only pay a small amount for each but check the total and how much it spoied .
