I agree with the other answerers that asking a doctor about what you can do to avoid heart problems is definitely a good idea. I also recommend asking those members of your family who have had problems (if they are still alive) to tell you more about those problems. Are their problems related to coronary artery disease, heart failure, or both? Is there a history of high blood pressure? High cholesterol? Heart failure/cardiomyopathy?
Too often, when people talk about heart problems, coronary artery disease is just assumed. But that is not necessarily the nature of the problem if there is a history of something else, like cardiomyopathy or valve problems, in your family. So go into that doctor appointment armed with more insight on your family history, and you'll come out with a better idea of what to do next!

heart disease does run in families and you are right to be concerned. You should go to a doctor for a physical and have your cholesterol checked and if need be you can change your diet or even take cholesterol lowering drugs. The most important things you can do to avoid heart disease is don't smoke, watch your cholesterol and exercise at least for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week.

See your dr, tell him your concerns.
Managing your health is a partnership between you and your doctor. He must know everything you can think of that might have a bearing on your health.
I have no idea of your age. He may just reassure you, or run a battery of tests.
It is far easier to do them at 1PM on a Tuesday aftenoon that at 4 AM on a Sunday morning.
Do you have a regular primary care physician? if not, this would be a good place to start. Find one.
Be worried??? No. Be concerned,yes!
Good luck.

All the major disease run in my family too. I have found the magic cure. I drink water! 2-3 gallons daily. 6-8 glasses would do you quite well. Do not worry about water weight gain because you will urinate it out. Apple cider vinegar in a glass of water keeps all colds, flu and infections away. Just 2 tbls. in a glass of water will grow hair and nails long, cure depression and acne. Read the "dehydration" website. Remember what you are most afraid of will be drawn to you.

if heart disease runs in your family, it's a good idea to have a regular chech up with your regular doc or a cardiologist every year. it never hurts to check things out and it will give you peace of mind. cancer runs rampid in my family. i see a pulmonologist to be on the safe side each year.
