It happens because you're laying down and the fluid in your sinuses can not drain as they could if you were sitting upright. Get a neti pot and use it often, it will irrigate your sinuses and you won't have that problem anymore - just a suggestion. I finally got one and I feel so much better!

Pollen allergies, birch trees allergies, in fact most kinds of allergies, kick in in the early hours. I would suggest putting an alarm clock for an hour earlier, taking allergy med, and going back to sleep, you should be fine when you wake up again.

When you lie down for that long all the fluid is retained. This is why some people wake up with swollen eyes, face, etc.
I wake up with what you've described, every morning, and swollen eyes and face.

could possibly be allergies, but only a doctor visit could really tell you what it is caused by.
