Seeing a doctor about this would give you piece of mind. It is very likely that it is anxiety, as the most presenting concern for most americans is always tied to stress. But, there is a chance it could also be physiological. My advice would be to do some reflecting, write down when the fast beating frist started, how often it happens, and during what activities it happens. Also note what other kinds of feelings you get when your heart beast fast, are you scared and worried, do you also feel faint? This information will be very useful to your health care specialist in determining the cause of the problem. In the mean time, you can reduce your heart rate even by a little bit if you take time to relax and focus on your breathing.

Get an appointment with your family doctor. An EKG will probably only be useful if you are having the fast heart beat at the time you are hooked up to the machine. The best thing would be a holter monitor to see what the ol' ticker is doing. Some people have SVT runs (superventricular tachycardia). I don't know you but sometime caffeine can make these symptoms worse. The best thing is to get evaluated.

If you could be more specific about how fast your heart beats, and how long it beats fast and how many times you have been having this problem. I can help you answer some of your questions.
Also, dont be afraid. Your not going to die.
