First off.... if the website you went to was peta.org, don't go there again unless you're seeking amusement. PETA seems to value the life of a cockroach more than the life of a human.
Now, I know that modern day slaughterhouses are rather gruesome and hellish. Most of the pain that happens to animals there is completely avoidable if....
1. the slaughterhouse workers wouldn't take out their anger on the animals
2. meatpacking companies would use more modern, humane methods of killing the animals (they don't because humane methods cost more money)
3. (many more!)
Now then, besides slaughterhouses, you really can't control how every other person in the world treats animals. It all depends. There are good people, there are bad people. Just treat animals kindly yourself, and hopefully other people will follow your example.

Of course it is wrong. That is why many of us here are vegans and many vegetarians. If you are not yet, you might want to reconsider, since you obviously don't agree with the way animals are treated. (and that should be a natural reaction of every human being)
Meat industry doesnt want you to know, because they want to sell animal products, but there is a lot of information available on the internet, if you are interested in finding out the true price of meat.
For Pickle: There is no "humane" way of inslaving and murdering another creature. PETA might not be the most honest organisation, but those video clips on their site are real. Suffering is real.
edit,
I see some people here are discrediting those video clips without actually knowing where you got them from (if you saw any?). So why dont you check out information and clips from different vegan organisations and compare? And also if you really want to know, there is a possibility of visiting a slaughterhouse, (just drop in!) so you can see it with your own eyes.

Because people like that are just EVIL, utterly lack a conscience, and are lower than the lowest life form on this planet.
That's why I make sure the meat that I do eat is free range, organic, and humanely slaughtered. Usually Halaal or Kosher.

Absolutely! It kills me to watch those videos, it makes me so angry. If I ever witness anything like that, I get animal control and I'm over at that persons home faster than you can imagine. I will not deal with animal cruelty and most importantly I will not stand by and watch it happen. Go onto PETA.com for ideas on how to take a stand and fight animal cruelty.

Dude I hear ya! I've heard some things like that. The killing shouldnt be brutal at all. Sometime I think "why kill at all". Yes meat is good but is tortured meat good? no it isnt! God gave the animals into our hands, to carefully use them if we need to. Not to become demented slayers! I totally agree, I'm am such a animal lover!
Free the Llamas!!! prevent the animal abuse!!!

The website was funded by peta right. Animals are not usually treated that bad i bet peta does a hundred investigations and uses the worst footage to get their point across. They are just trying to accomplish their goals. They are biased but really who isnt biased. Its a personal decision if you dont think eating meat is wrong its ok and if you think it is acceptable ok. Its not like you are being an evil person for eating meat.

yea, that's why you should eat either halaal meat or kosher meat because they don't kill the animal violently. the animal does not feel any pain and all the blood drains out. if the animal is treated poorly or if it's too old and sick then it is out of the question to use it for meat. of course we don't say kill, we say sacrifice.
