an insulin-dependant diabetic is not neccisarily only a type 2 diabetic. i have type 1 and i am an insulin-dependant diabetic. i have to take insulin 4+ times a day. that is waht an insulin-dependant diabetic is; needing to inject with insulin to maintain average blood sugar.

Insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) is a term that is no longer used. It was used to describe Type 1 diabetics in the past with the Type 2 diabetics described as being non-insulin dependent diabetics (NIDDM) (the M in both terms stands for mellitus.)

Because many type 2 diabetics use insulin, the terms IDDM and NIDDM became confused and used improperly in the medical community. The only terms that should be used now are type 1 and type 2, with some type 2 patients described as taking insulin. Alas, it is sometimes difficult to teach an old dog new tricks and the insulin dependent terms are sometimes used.

This is known as Type 1 Diabetes. An insulin dependent diabetic must give himself one or more injections of insulin daily to regulate the levels of glucose in the bloodstream. Insulin is a hormone that converts glucose in the bloodstream into energy for the cells.

Insulin Dependent Diabetes (aka: IDDM Type 1) is a disorder of the pancreas in which it does not produce insulin to effectively control blood sugar levels. IDDM requires daily shots of insulin and blood sugar monitoring via a small sample of blood (normally obtained via a finger stick).

Insulin is the chemical which breaks down sugar in your bloodstream. In a diabetic, the pancreas, which produces the insulin, is not working properly. In Type 1 diabetes, it has stopped producing insulin altogether. In Type 2, it still produces insulin, but your body has become ineffective at using it. An insulin-dependent diabetic is one whose diabetes cannot be controlled simply by diet or medication--they must actually give themselves shots of insulin, sometimes several times a day, so they can have enough to live normally. Our dog is insulin-dependent, and we have to give her 28 units of insulin twice daily at regular times.

A type 1 diabetic is insulin dependant, that is to say our pancreas no longer makes insulin, or barely makes any so we have to take injections either with syringe, or pump when we eat to use the food we eat. If we do not then we will be in the hospital and slowly die.
