I do both actually! Sometimes putting the pasta in the sauce, instead of the other way round, means it doesnt get covered so well.

sauce on the pasta.
the pasta is removed from the water and drained. this often cools the pasta so that it is not very hot. adding steaming sauce to the top of the pasta keeps it warm so that it is the correct eating temperature. and It looks much nicer when it is served.

Well, I spent some time with my friend's family in Italy and they always have pasta with very little sauce. And the sauce is always mixed in with the pasta, never on top.

A small quantity of the sauce should be added to the pasta after the pasta has been drained - this is to lubricate the pasta, and does not prejudice the al dente texture.
The pasta should then be placed into a bowl and brought to the table, along with the sauce (in a separate container) The diner can then choose how much sauce he or she wants.
If you place the pasta into the sauce, the pasta loses its al dante texture and can become soggy.
(Al dante??? - I've been watching too much Gordon Ramsay! [Dante's inferno = hell - Ramsays's programme 'hells kitchen!)

People are different. My lady likes to put he pasta on the plate then add the sauce. I like to mix the pasta and sauce together in the pan then serve. Don't let anyone tell you what to do. Try your own preferences.

Sauce onto pasta. More presentable.
Alot depends on the type of dish though. For bolognese this is always the case. If it is mushrooms in a cream sauce, for example, then mixed is OK.

I mix the pasta into the sauce in the pan. It is easier to serve, and also because that's how my mom does it.

I cook the pasta for a minute less then the package directions, then toss it in with the sauce and let it cook for another minute with the sauce.
