Already take Advair, but don't need that very often, just wondering if there is anything I can take to KEEP it under control.

Hi Brandon! Your Advair is not...........please if you get anything from this....a rescue inhaler. It is a controller medication. It contains two medications combined to help prevent asthma attacks. You should be taking it everyday, twice a day. I'm afraid, with the context of your question, that you use it during an asthma attack. You should be using pure albuterol for asthma attacks. There should be no questions asked...no exceptions. People have died from using their controller medications during an attack instead of their rescue inhaler.

From your question, your asthmas isn't under control. If you use your advair as it should be used(twice a day...everyday!), you may just find that your asthma is much much much better controled. There is nothing over the counter that can be used.

There have been suggestions of magnesium supplements (afterall, they use IV Mg in status asthmaticus) but I consulted a published pediatric pharmacotherapist with a specialty in asthma about this, and he said there would be no benefit from Mg supplements!

So, please, use your Advair twice a day, everyday. Know which inhaler is your rescue inhaler and label it so there is no question during an attack.

Stay away from Aleve (naproxen), aspirin, and Ibuprofen containing products. You may take Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain. Those others may bring on an asthma attack!

Please, any question just ask! Or ask your pharmacist.

My wife would be the best to answer this as she is a medical doctor and has also done a post graduate degree in anti-ageing medicine or integrative medicine.
Knowing that she has also suffered from asthma, I can tell you what she did.
Firstly find a doctor who has studied integrative medicine. They will take a more natural approach, which may vary depending on your level of asthma. You should be able to find one near you by doing a google search on integrative medical practitioners.
My wife who was very much against vitamins in the beginning now takes quite a few and has had incredible results. What type of vitamins is the question though. There are many out there. You need a good quality NATURAL supplement - not synthetic! Start with a good multivitamin supplement and also an Omega 3 supplement. BUT make sure the Omega 3 has vitamin E as this stabilises the Omega 3 and stops it going rancid. You will need somewhere between 3000 and 6000 mg per day. It will also help your general cellular health. The integrative practitioner may also prescribe something else - again depending on the severity, but he/she should be able to get you off or reduce the amount of times you use a puffer. Hope this helps, Ian

OK, sorry Bree, but I'm a Respiratory Therapist and an asthmatic. You're right about the Advair-it should be taken every day. Advair contains a steroid (flunisolide), to reduce inflammation and a long acting bronchdilator(salmeterol) to keep airways open.
Inhaled medications like Albuterol and Xopenex are called rescue inhalers because they PREVENT nothing whatsoever-they only treat symptoms. They are short acting bronchodilators (4-6 hours) which cause airways to open for that amount of time. I tell my patients to think of them like aspirin for a headache-if you don't have symptoms don't take it.
You can also look into antihistamines if you have allergies-most asthma does have an allergic component. Yo can take these just when you have symptoms as well.
Lastly the leukotriene inhibitor Singulair works to prevent your body's inflammatory response and is taken every day to PREVENT asthma symptoms.
The best thing is to find a good pulmonary doctor and discuss all these options with him to develop a regimen that works best for you.

I do agree on a more natural approach. A very affective certified organic multivitamin. I have bronchial asthma that kicks in when If I get sick. My fiance has smokers asthma...He doesnt' smoke but if he comes in contact with it...oh oh! So we tried a natural approach. He is a psychologist and is currently working with a natural company that has amazing products. They might not be the cheapest, but the WORK! I actually know of a gentleman who had environmental asthma and was around 60 years of age. He tood the multivitamin and actually was able to get off of his puffer! These vitamins have so many phytonutrients and antioxidants, that they actually do protect and regenerate your health! I had allergies to pets for many years...and even when I started to manage an Animal Hospital. I've been managing the place for 5 years now, and I dont feel anything! That's been since I've been using this multi...Double X. Go to www.kszymanska.qhealthzone.com and check it out if you'd like. Remember, natural remedies don't work RIGHT AWAY. It all depends how your system will take to them and based on your metabolizm, when you will see a difference in how you feel!

I feel your pain. I've had asthma for 14 years now and have seen several doctors. The truth is, there is no known cure for asthma at the moment. But the symptoms can be prevented. It really depends on what causes your brother's asthma. Mine is usually dust and hot weather. But I think the universal method is using the control inhaler.

I cured my Asthma the natural way?

Try taking Omega3 or Fish Oil capsules, I haven't had an attack ever since I took Omega3 supplement.

Garlic & horseradish tablets can help too.
