You could have the doctor check it out just to be sure.

If it is a cold sore, then at just 21 months you will need to be careful when s/he is having an outbreak that s/he does not touch or pick at the sore and then touch his/her eyes.

For skittle - if you get Cold Sores, then you do have herpes. Cold Sores are caused by the herpes virus, either HSV1 or HSV2. They can be oral, genital or anywhere on the body; and the virus can be transferred via oral sex.

There's no harm in having the sore looked at. For best diagnosis, take her to the doc while the sore is still fresh so your doctor can swab it for identification.

Most people pick up cold sores (HSV-1) as toddlers (y'know, that phase where kids like to slobber on things and stuff things in their mouths). About 60% of all adults have HSV-1, so it's not a rare deal.

Many people who have HSV-1 may get a few cold sores, but stop having them as they get older. However, in your in-laws' case, they seem to be the lucky ones who are prone to outbreaks. and yes, your kid can inherit this tendency.

Cold sore outbreaks can be lessened with prescription medications like acyclovir (although I don't know whether it's okay to use on toddlers).

In case it's not a cold sore, if the corners of her mouth are cracking, it may mean she's a little bit deficient in vitamin B. I am prone to Vit B deficiency myself (I don't eat a lot of protein, even though I'm actually carnivorous). But I remedy the problem by taking a daily multivitamin.

i get cold sores all the time, my family is very prone to them. i get them from stress, the sun, being sick...etc. but i dont have herpes or anything like that. but if if makes you feel better there is no harm in taking your little one to the doctor to have it checked out. :)
