I've always read that there are actually health benefits to eating peppers, garlic and other things that we normally associate with gastric upsets! I suppose that if you have an existing digestive disorder, then too much spice might not be a good idea, but otherwise, I'm for eating the hot stuff!

The role that spicy foods play in creating ulcers is questionable. More and more doctors are starting to believe that spicy foods do not cause ulcers at all.
One quick quote, from wikipedia:
"Tobacco smoking, blood group, spices and other factors that were suspected to cause ulcers until late in the 20th century, are actually of relatively minor importance in the development of peptic ulcers."
From personal and secondhand experiences, spicy foods can make pre-existing ulcers more painful, and they can also make acid reflux more pronounced and painful. But if you don't have any gastrointestinal problems currently, and spicy food doesn't bother you, I wouldn't worry about eating it. People have been eating spicy foods regularly for years and years, and it's never seemed to be a cause for major concern. Many people even find that spicy foods can be beneficial to their health.

Indians use very high amount of spicy food but I have never heard of any one killed due to spicy food. The region I come from in India uses some of the highest level of chili and spice but they do not have higher incidents of ulcers or cancer. In fact we believe that eating chili sharpens your brains. Same goes for sour or extreme tastes too. Entire south India eats tamrind based food through out their life. It all depends on what one gets used to eating. Any way moderation is always advisable for long term enjoyment of tasty meals.

Those who have been eating spicy food all along ,need not suddenly wake up to the fact that spices are bad,if you are new to spices, them it is reasonable to take time to adjust to the fire & fury of truly spicy food, moderation would appear to be the secret of avoiding any undesirous effects, many of which have been pointed out in answers so far.

Most spicy foods are associated with ulcers because they irritate existing ulcers, and not because they cause them. Spicy food cannot kill, and has been shown to have tremendous health benefits.
People pass around stories about spicy foods because they are afraid of them. It is easier for people to feel comfortable avoiding spice because it might cause cancer, than it is to avoid them because they are pansies. Thus rumors get started.

Whoever told you that probably believes that microwave ovens cause cancer, aluminium cookware causes Alzheimer's Disease, eating lamb will give you Mad Sheep Disease, drinking Coca Cola will drive you insane and durians with alcohol is instantly fatal. Incidentally, I was the first gourmet in the world to match durians with wine at The Singapore Marriott Hotel in 2004 and I am pleased to tell you, my friend, that I am very much alive and enjoying life. {:-)
