Okay, before all you "there's no God so there was no Great Flood" types start itching to finger your keyboards with the latest theory that the flood never took place, give it a rest. I'm sure you can find something else to do with your fingers for now. This addresses a different issue.

I was watching a program on the History Channel about studies done on the shape of the Ark and the needed space to accommodate the animals and food. Repeated, they stayed with the idea that it had to be a box. A box held the most, and flouted level, which would have prevented a lot of very sick animals, let alone humans. It would have also been the easiest to build, without the need to bend wood to fit a curved hull.

So, why do we still teach children that it was a boat? Don't they deserve receiving the correct info?

Or, has this myth gained the same reverence that Santa Claus and the Easter Rabbit has?

You got it one!
if you take the blue prints in the bible & rebuilt it to a model scale you find indeed you have a giant floating box, that fulfilled the need to look after the inhabitants of it.

God gave Noah very specific blueprints on how to build his Ark, and Noah followed those to the T supposedly. When it was finished what he had was, as you describe it, a box. We tell children that it was a boat because of the simplicity of their minds. When we teach them that story, they already know what a boat is, but have never heard of an arc. Saying that it looked like a barge isn't going to explain it any better. We have just relyed on saying "boat" because that is easy to explain and understand. The actual size and shape of the Ark is not what is important, but instead it is the story that God decided to wipe out all things wicked, but still had compassion to let Noah repopulate the Earth. A quick word to the skeptics, The shape and size of the Ark made it impossible to capsize and this has been recreated, tested, and proven in a labarotory. Whether it is true or not, I find it remarkable that so many years ago someone wrote those measurements in the bible, and today we find out exactly how perfect the creation was compared to the "boat" most people assume was built.

Does the shape matter? I believe the whole idea was to save some of creation to replenish the earth after the wicked were washed away. And that God protects His followers. Also I don't think a box floats as level as a boat given there would have been waves. And what if all the weight ended up on one side it would have tipped. As Christians we should believe that it happened, and not worry so much over the insignificant details. If the exact shape was important we would see more details given as in the "Ark of the Covenant". Besides God said build an Ark. So Noah built an Ark, not a box. He would have made it as a boat given it was to transport them on water.
