The addiction is called PICA.
The scant research that has been done on the root causes of Pica suggest that the majority of those afflicted tend to suffer some biochemical deficiency and more often iron deficiency. Often the substance eaten by those with the disorder does not even contain the mineral they are deficient in. In cases where a biochemical deficiency is the problem, Pica is generally not discovered until the deficiency is addressed. Once the deficiency has been identified and treated with vitamins or minerals, the Pica is usually resolved. If a mineral deficiency is not identified as the cause of Pica, it often leads to a misdiagnosis as a mental disorder. If the deficiency continues to go unnoticed it can become severe if the root of the deficiency is a disease or internal problem.

I was very addicted to ice. I was so addicted, it drove my co-workers and family crazy. I ate it until my mouth would become so numb I couldn't talk because my tongue would hardly move...I would fight my kids for it and restrict them from using it if the icebin was almost empty. I even resorted to buying it by the bag from Sonic. AND, I ate snow all winter! THAT's Bad! One girl at work told me that they always knew when her brother's iron was low because he ate ice relentlessly. I was severely anemic and didn't know it. Having had a blood clot, I have to do routine bloodwork once a year and the last tests found my iron was less than 1. My oncologist gave me an iron transfusion and since that time, I do not eat ice anymore. I even usually have my drinks w/out if they are cold enough (not super cold, because I can't take the cold in my mouth anymore). That turn around occured w/in 2 weeks of the transfusion. My fiance offers ice in my drinks and when I say no, he always comments on what a turn around I made. He just can't believe it.

Just because they didn't say anything does not mean you don't suffer an iron deficiency. Even just a slight deficiency can cause problems such as this.

You may be somewhat warm natured in body chemistry. Like having an inward fever often. I'm not sure this is an addiction but rather a habit you've acquired. Just be careful of the chewing on it with the braces.

i love ice to.

In 2001 I had gastric bypass surgery and lost 180 lbs. I cannot drink water it makes me sick, but eatting and crunching on ice is wonderful.

Isn't eating ice the same as drinking water. NO, it's not. I can't drink water, but ice doesnt effect me. its wierd.

i thought i was the only one that felt this way.

you like the sound of cranches, it is pleasure in the mouth, it cools your tongue and also your gums that are may be a bit painful with the braces? or it makes your mouth feel clean... also, water is good for you, as long as you are not eating ice when it's a snowing day, so you won't catch colds.
can i have one? i like mine with orange juice. yami

I love them too. they´re delicious........!!
And it´s better to eat ice creams than other sugar stuff, for the fact that they´re cold so your body has to spend calories to keep your body warm again so you can´t put on so much weigh on as you´d put on eating doughnuts.....
I´m on diet for twelve years and ice-creams are my best supplies of sugar when I need it.
