The Bible says He descended to Hell during the three days between his death and resurrection (actually it was two - three is including the day of crucifixion and the day of resurrection).
Actually the words used may not mean the same place as that of eternal damnation; it may have been a "holding house" for those who died before Jesus' sacrifice made Heaven possible for them. What it actually says is that "He descended to Hades and preached to the spirits in prison."

It says He did in the creeds, but I can't remember where or if it says that in the Bible (it is 3:30 am, I am not a bad Christian if I can't remember this lol). Personally I think He could go to hell and either make a statement about how he had conquered death or to make a point to Satan. Or it could have been part of taking all of our sins. I don't know exactly, it is a great question, and I think I might bring it up with a theologian I know.

According to the Nicene creed which was formulated at the council of Nicea Christ descended into Hell and on the third day He rose again and later ascended into Heaven.
This is not stated in the Gospels but church tradition and only Catholics are duty bound to believe this.
Having said this there are a lot of things connected to Christianity that just seem to be proper even if the Gospels do not mention them,it also seems to me to be in accordance with the mercy of God that those who died before the redemptive sacrifice of Christ should also have the benefits too.
Therefore the traditional teaching is that the very moment Christ died His spirit went down to the place of the dead and preached salvation and returned to His lifeless body to resurrect it.

According to Jesus, He has the "keys" to death and hell (the grave). There's only one time He could have taken away these keys - when He died, while He was in the tomb.
According to Scripture, while He was in Hell (the grave), He "went & preached to those in prision (Hades)."
There's several different interpretations of when, how, & why He went to Hades, but as far as when He would have taken away the keys to death & the grave, the three days in the tomb is the only time that makes any sense, considering why He was in the tomb.

He invaded the valley of the dead to retrieve the keys to the gates of hell that Satan had taken in the Garden of Eden, so that the gates of hell could not prevail against His people. This was after His death and before resurrection - in those three days.

You may have heard that Jesus - the Son of God - has taken on himself all the sins of humanity of all time. In order to do this He had to empty himself to the lowest point to where sin ultimately would lead those who sin. That lowest point is Hell. His death was not only a physical death on the cross but he also had to endure the anguish of the human soul entering hell too - the feeling of being abandoned by God. The suffering of the torture he suffered on the cross we can relate too and is manifestly obvious to us who are alive. However, you have to stretch your imagination quite a bit to empathised with someone suffering the damnation of their soul too. But this was the pits for Jesus. Consequently, by his Resurrection he has thoroughly conquered Death - the complete death that a human being can suffer;namely that of our body and our soul too. Jesus did not come to partially save us but to save us totally.
This is the great mystery of our Christian faith. Hard to believe, but for those who believe it is something quite awsome - it shows the sort of investment God has made becouse of his unconditional love for us - his beloved humanity.
Peace
